Today, we are analysing two competing summer tyres: Continental PremiumContact 6 and Kumho Ecsta HS51.
Continental PremiumContact 6, produced in Slovakia, Germany, and Czech Republic, scores an impressive 87% in our rating. This touring tyre is a newer model replacing Continental ContiPremiumContact 5, providing improved performance and quality. It has consistently topped in tests conducted by Autobild, ADAC, Teknikens, and Autozeitung. Its best features: outstanding wet braking, superior wet handling, dry braking, dry driving behaviour, safety and comfort. This demonstrates the Continental PremiumContact 6's strength as a balanced all-round performer, suitable for both dry and wet conditions.
On the other hand, the Kumho Ecsta HS51, made in China, scores much lower at 45% on our site. Despite this, it still offers decent performance with some strengths. It performs well on price/value and demonstrates excellent aquaplaning resistance, both in cross and longitudinal situations. The tyre also shows strong performance in wet handling, wet side guiding and wet circle cornering. However, its lower test positions in Autobild, ADAC, Teknikens, and Autozeitung and fewer distinguished features suggest it falls behind when compared to the Continental PremiumContact 6.
The Kumho Ecsta HS51 model has now been replaced by the newer Kumho Ecsta HS52. The potential for improved performance in the HS52 could mean better competition for other tyre brands such as Continental.
